What is a single pane of glass?

A single pane of glass view is a system that aggregates data (and often integrations) and allows it to be visualised in one place (in this case a computer monitor).

What is good about a single pane of glass?

It can be an important tool in getting the 'bigger picture' view by pulling together data, stats or events from disparate systems or devices. Effectively a single pane of glass view is a UI or visualisation but it could (in our case) go much further in providing unification, automation, analytics and reporting. It also allows that single pane of glass to be customised to the users so each stakeholder in the business can see the things that matter to them, from the cleaner to the CEO and everyone in-between.

Is it called anything else?

A single pane of glass is also sometimes shortened to SPOG as an acronym, but it means the same thing.

Why would I use a single pane of glass?

If you have data points that need to be intelligently brought together and displayed in a way that will help understanding a single pane of glass is perfect. Also if you want to then use analytics to gain actionable insights it is also the ideal tool. It could also be used for asset management, predictive or proactive maintenance and even to create your own digitalisation platform, tailored to what is important within an organisation.

Using a single pane of glass in IoT

This is probably one of the most important and popular use cases for a single pane of glass in 2025. The ability to import lots of device data across estates in a normalised and standardised way can bring amazing insights and business intelligence.

The ultimate single pane of glass view is AssetBook IoT which is an end to end software for unification and digitalisation of EVERYTHING! Whatever you want to see, however it is controlled and whenever you want to add to it, AssetBook IoT is the solution.
